Bernie Sanders wants to cancel all student debts

Senator Bernie Sanders and progressive legislators from the House of Representatives will present an initiative to cancel all student debts that weigh about 45 million Americans.

The measure goes beyond the proposal of one of the main contenders in the contest for the Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Warren’s plan would cancel $50 billion in debt to those who have an income of less than $100,000 per year, that is, some 42 million Americans, less than the amount planned in the Sanders plan. Warren proposed his plan at the beginning of the year.

“In a generation very affected by the fall of Wall Street in 2008, the measure condones all student debts and puts an end to the absurdity of sentencing an entire generation to a lifetime indebtedness for the ‘crime’ of obtaining a university education” Sanders said in prepared statements that will be released on Monday at a press conference attended by the promotoras of the proposal, representatives Ilhan Omar and Pramila Jayapal.

Sanders and Warren vie for the support of Democratic liberal voters. Both are part of the list of 20 aspirants who will have debates this week for the first time; Warren will appear between Tuesday’s opponents and Sanders on Wednesday.
