India reported 62,258 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day rise so far this year. With fresh cases, the nationwide Covid-19 tally has mounted to 1,19,08,910, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data released on Saturday.
India’s active caseload has increased to 4,52,647, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,12,95,023.
Meanwhile, the total number of deaths due to the infection increased to 1,61,240 with 291 more fatalities reported in India in the last 24 hours, the ministry said.
Maharashtra has been witnessing a spike in daily Covid-19 cases since mid-February after a nearly four-month period of decline in cases. On Friday, Maharashtra reported 36,902 new Covid-19 cases, recording the highest single-day spike in any Indian state since the beginning of the pandemic last year.
The Maharashtra government on Friday said night curfew would be imposed across the state from Sunday (March 28). The curfew does not put restrictions on movement at night but prohibits gathering in public places.
India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, and 50 lakh on September 16.
The Covid-19 tally went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20, and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 23,86,04,638 samples have been tested up to March 25.
